Men can be more at risk …
Due to not seeking treatment ..In the UK the suicide rates for men are higher than for women across all age groups. According to the office for National Statistics, back in the early 1990s the highest suicide rates in the UK were among men over the age of 75, Rates in this age group have since declined from 25.1 per 100,000 in 1991 to 14.0 per 100,000 in 2008 meaning the age group has now the lowest suicide rate across the three male age bands.
In contrast, suicide rates among men in the 15-44 age bracket peaked in 1998 at 24.0 per 100,000 then steadily declined until 2008, however, since then the rate has increased once again from 17.6 per 100,000 in 2007 to 18.6 per 100,000 in 2008. There has been various suggestions as to why this is, namely their reluctance to discuss problems, express their feelings, resulting in the reduced likelihood to seek help… it’s good to talk…”courage doesn’t happen when you have all the answers. It happens when you are ready to face the questions you have been avoiding your whole life”
